Broome to Cape Leveque

Had a lovely stay in Broome and now it was off to Cape Leveque, we decided not to book as most places were full and we wanted to try to get a bush camp out near One Arm Point. Went out to Middle Lagoon to see what it was like eventhough the trip out from the main road took nearly an hour.  Beautiful place on the water a fishermans paradise, lots of caravans and boats.
Called into Beagle Bay to see the Sacred Heart Church. The church was first built in 1890 out of bush timber and paperbark and these did not last long as they were regularly destroyed by cyclones, bush fires and white ants, along with the first world war which affected even the remotest corners of the world. The church was rebuild in 1917 using 60,000 hand formed clay bricks fired in local kilns, a team of local women used shell to decorate the church. Mother of pearl, cowries, volutes and olive shells were gathered on the local beaches. The Sacred Heart Church is not a museum but the centre of a living and vibrant parish.
We found a spot at Gumbanan which is a bush camp located just before One Arm Point community. and has magnificant surrounding ocean views. It has toilets and cold showers, with little water, but never the less a wonderful little spot, You can see the sunrise and the sunset. We even saw the staircase to the moon on our own rocky point.
Our camp was frequently visited by a lot of birds, parrots, Doves, Quail, Double bar finches and Gouldian finches were in abundance. then there was Squeeky beach which was a beach one minute then a mangrove area with rock pools when the tide goes out.  This is such a lovely spot could have stayed a week.
Visited One Arm Point community, went to the Trochus shell hatchery. These are medium to large top shaped sea snails with a pearly inside to their shell. The locals eat the meat and the shell is used to make buttons for high end fashion and is also polished and sold as souviners. The ground shell is used in floor tiles, metalic paint and shampoo.
A visit to Cygnet Bay Pearlfarm for lunch finnished off a great day. Then back to Gumbanan for a few drinks while watching the sunset.
