Enjoyed our stay in Kununurra finishing with a day trip down the Ord River , what an amazing River, spectacular scenery through the gorges ending at the Dam wall on Lake Argyle.
We then set off to conquer the mighty Gibb River Road.
The Gibb River road is almost 660k's long and was originally constructed back in the 1960's to transport stock from surrounding cattle stations between Derby and Kununurra. It is named after geologist and explorer Andrew Gibb Maitland and is one of two major roads which disect the Kimberley. It is often closed due to flooding in the wet season which runs generally from November through to March.
The road has scenic views of geological formations and natural scenery as well as unique fauna and flora. Accomodation is offered by several cattle stations in the area.
Had a great stay at El Questro with our campsite nestled under a grove of trees on the banks of the
Pentecost River, we ventured out on self drive 4x4 adventures to Saddleback ridge, which has great views over the station, the road was quite steep and rocky but worth it. Then it was on to Pigeon Hole Lookout which again is low range 4x4 climb to the lookout. Magnificant views over the mighty Pentecost River.
It was on to Ellenbrae Station where we had a great camp and met up with a couple that we helped with their flat tyre on the Durrack river crossing.
The Gibb River Road has lived up to its reputation as being a dificult road to drive with numerous vehicles and trailers falling victim to the endless corrugations, not to mention the hundreds of tyre punctures.
Stayed at Mt Elizabeth Station where we had cute little visitors in camp in the way of Agile Wallabies, they are so tame.
Walked to Bell gorge beautiful but so busy, as it is now school holidays here in W.A.
We finally got to Broome where accomodation is difficult as the Broome races is on as well as staircase to the moon.
